Both Venus and Ophelia represent the duality of how the world views, labels, and limits women. Venus is the Roman goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. Her image embodies the strength women have by harnessing their femininity. Ophelia, from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is Venus’s reciprocal. She symbolizes traits that are seen as detrimental to one’s womanhood. Ophelia is labelled as unfaithful and impure, the worst things a woman can be, which ultimately leads her to her death.
